The Foundation for Biomedical Research (FBR) is dedicated to improving human and animal health by promoting public understanding and support for the humane and responsible use of animals in medical and scientific research. FBR has provided over two decades of continuous service to America’s research community and is the leading voice of scientific reason and medical progress in the ongoing, sometimes violent debate that surrounds animal research.

Dr. Michael E. DeBakey chairs FBR’s board of governors. Named a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress in 2000, Dr. DeBakey is an internationally recognized medical inventor, gifted teacher, prolific scholar, premier surgeon, distinguished medical statesman, and the recipient of 57 honorary degrees from colleges, universities and medical schools around the world. Other members of FBR's board of governors include seven Nobel laureates, 12 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 13 fellows of the National Academy of Sciences and a former Surgeon General.

Through its innovative programs of public information and education, FBR seeks to enlighten the news media, teachers, students and the general public about the essential need for animals in research and their vital role in medical and scientific advancement. It serves as an accessible, reliable resource for the news media and works to bring American journalists and scientists together to promote exceptional and ongoing news coverage that contributes to public appreciation and respect for the humane and responsible use of animals in medical and scientific research.
