Cause Description:
The Roanoke Island Presbyterian Church maintains a non-profit day care for teen mothers to enable them to continue their high school education. The rules of the program prohibit them from getting pregnant while they are enrolled, and to complete their high school education. The teen mothers are also required to help maintain the facility after school hours. This mission of the church has been very effective in reducing the incidence of repeat teen pregnancy in the young women involved with the program. The day care also accepts referrals from Dare County Social Services. Ten children, infants to three years old are currently cared for. There is no church building. Members meet in a small house that also serves as the day-care facility. A fund-raising program has been started to raise revenues to build a church building and maintain the day care program.
