Cause Description:
Ursuline Social Outreach was founded by a group of Ursuline nuns to reach out to people who were underserved in our geographic area. Our primary goal was to find a means to enable immigrants and low income people to participate more fully in the economic, political and social life of our area. We began by setting up an adult learning center on a bus route where volunteers would teach English and citizneship to new and old immigrants. This was expanded in 1999 to job training. Now classes are offered in basic typing and use of Microsoft Word. We have also developed a clearinghouse for information on free or low cost educational opportunities in our area as well as job openings. Our philosophy is that volunteers can return to the community through the sharing of their education and life experience with those who lack either or both. At present we have 66 volunteers working with approximately 500 people each year. For further information contact osust@aol.com.
