Cause Description:
Museum/Library celebrating the first printing of the Stars and Stripes military newspaper during the Civil War in this town of Bloomfield, MO, as well as the continuing legacy of the Stars and Stripes, still printed for the American Armed Forces overseas. Exhibits of miltaria/newspapers from 1861 to present explore journalism and morale-building of the military through the medium of the Stars and Stripes newspaper. The museum features special exhibits on former "Stripers" such as Andy Rooney and Steve Kroft of CBS "60 Minutes", the creator of "Superman" Jerry Siegel, WWII cartoonist Bill Mauldin, and many other G.I. journalists, artists, photographers who continue to serve America's service personnel abroad. Collections of military gear from all major wars and service-oriented artifacts enhance the visitor's perceptions of the trials and dedication of the Armed Forces. A Missouri State Veterans Cemetery sited adjacent to the museum grounds is scheduled to open in 2002.
