Cause Description:
El Arco Iris is a free after school and summer arts, recreational, and youth empowerment program for disadvantaged and at-risk youth ages 9-19 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, one of the most impoverished cities in the state. The program offers art classes such as ceramics, dance, theater, photography, computer graphics and publishing, and the martial arts. It also offers recreational and cultural field trips and provides tutoring to the youth to assist them with school work and to encourage them to go on to college or pursue a career. The program has strong emphasis on building the confidence and skills of at risk youth and trains them in youth leadership and citizenship. A major component of the program is "YouthPower" which engages the youth in Community Service Learning projects such as renovating and beautifying parks and playgrounds.
