Cause Description:
World Neighbors works with the rural poor in 18 countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America to strengthen the ability of individuals and communities to solve their own problems of hunger, poverty, and disease. World Neighbors programs integrate improved agriculture, community-based health and family planning, environmental conservation, water and sanitation, and small business. By promoting self-reliance instead of dependence on outside aid, World Neighbors programs offer participants real hope for lasting change. Local people become experts, as they gain new self-confidence and skills. World Neighbors was founded in 1951 in Oklahoma City, where a 28-person headquarters staff is assisted by local volunteers. Regional field offices are located in Kenya, Honduras, Nepal, Burkina Faso, and Indonesia.
