Cause Description:
Nikki Manx Dance Project presents cause-driven multimedia experiences surrounding social and environmental issues to an audience of all ages and backgrounds. Bringing an unique gestural vocabulary driven by social justice creates an invigorating experience for those who witness the company’s work. In accordance with this deep meaning, Artistic Director Nicole Mahncke makes every effort to inspire progressive solutions to the questions that her work suggests. The company upholds their mission of representing innovative work that strives to enliven the passion surrounding important social issues. This enables our audience to question aspects brought to the forefront by the thought-provoking elements of live text, originally composed music, projected media, and theatrical movement. The first repertory piece, Progressive Transformation, explored a call for change within our nation’s model of big business, and the imbalance within our workforce. NMDP went on to develop over 28 interactive dance pieces, and is an active member of the Bergen Dancemakers, a collective of NJ choreographers, which provides feedback and mentorship. Since it’s inception, the company has performed at charitable events, festivals, children’s events, places of worship, libraries, senior homes, and schools on over 100 occasions. Nikki Manx Dance Project has produced four evening length productions; “The Big Picture,” “Call to Action,” “We the People,” and “Revolution: Earth.” Dances in these shows explore issues such as; the some times fatal effects of bullying in our schools, the celebration of the marriage equality act, and support for Bergen County’s goal to end homelessness in the state. Our dances have also covered topics concerning animal rights, commercialism, gender identity, climate change, military occupation, civil rights, recovery, and the legacy of Nelson Mandela.
