Cause Description:
Well-prepared and adequately resourced educators of physicians, nurses, and other health professionals are the basic building blocks of stronger health systems. The World Health Organization estimates a global deficit of about 12.9 million skilled health professionals (midwives, nurses and physicians) by 2035. Health care provider shortages limit the ability of countries to deliver basic healthcare, to respond to emerging and more complex needs, and to teach their future health professionals. Seed Global Health’s (Seed) mission is to strengthen health education and delivery in places with critical shortages of health professionals by working with partner countries to meet their long-term health care human resource needs. Seed partners with the Peace Corps and the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) to create the Global Health Service Partnership (GHSP), a public-private partnership investing in local capacity and human resources for health. Seed’s model places volunteer physicians and nurses as faculty for a year in local medical, nursing, and heath professional schools. The volunteers teach and work alongside local faculty to expand capacity, strengthen the quality and breadth of education, provide improved health professional development opportunities, and importantly, improve care for patients. Since 2013, Seed has trained over 7,200 students, faculty, and clinical staff in Malawi, Tanzania, and Uganda; taught over 300 new methodologies, skills and courses to local staff; and provided improved care for patients.
