Cause Description:
Since 1965, Contra Costa ARC has been supporting people with developmental disabilities and their families in a variety of indispensable ways. For infants and toddlers with special needs, its early intervention programs have established track records for helping children overcome developmental delays and integrate into educational settings with their peers. The two after school programs offer students ages 11 to 22 years opportunities to explore various community settings, ways to give back to the community, help with reaching educational and social goals. The programs also serve as a much appreciated resource for parents. CARE Parent Network has been offering its own resource for parents with newly diagnosed children through adolescence and the transition into adulthood. CARE Parent Network maintains information not just in the form of lists and data bases and a library, but also in parents who run support groups making their own knowledge and experiences available for other parents. The wide array of adult services provided make self- determination a possibility as adults with disabilities determine the best way to meet their potential and achieve greater independence. Self-determination can be achieved by individuals in a variety of ways: accessing typical community settings, volunteering and giving back, gaining employable skills, and working in integrated environments. Lastly, Contra Costa ARC has been a tireless advocate for the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities, at the local and state levels, never wavering in its mission to help people live valued lives and achieve the greatest level of independence possible.
