Friends of the Spoil Islands, Inc. FOSI Mission Statement: 'We are a Florida nonprofit Citizen Support Organization dedicated to the preservation, restoration and enhancement of the Indian River Lagoon Aquatic Preserve spoil islands and educating others about the importance of the spoil islands as valuable educational, recreational and conservation resources.' There are 137 islands running 156 miles bordering 4 counties. Some islands are for Conservation only as they have become bird hatcheries or are used for other educational purposes. Many of these beautiful islands are for recreational use to anyone, for free, no reservations. Many have picnic tables, grills, fire pits, camping grounds, beautiful walking trails, good fishing areas, boat landings, swimming and much more. These islands have many invasive plants such as the Brazilian Pepper plant (grows very quickly and chokes out the native plants necessary to keep the islands alive.) Also the Australian Pine which grows quickly and very tall making too much shade for our native Red Mangroves to live which are the most essential plant that tries to secure the shorelines. Also where ever a pine needle/limb or any part of the tree drops to the ground, it releases a toxic resin that makes that ground unable to sustain the life of another native species attempted to grow there. FOSI is dedicated to removing the invasives, plant native species of Florida, keep the islands free of trash left behind from visitors, erect picnic tables, install grills for camp sites and make fire pits for campers to enjoy a warm fire. FOSI is a new non profit with a handful of members - 15. We have our work cut out for us but we intend to save these beautiful island gems that dot the Indian River Lagoon. They are a vital part of life in the IRL, note that the Indian River Lagoon is the most diverse estuary in all of North America. There's only 1 lagoon like the IRL and the 137 islands are a gift for all to enjoy. FOSI is now their caretaker. Google us. Google the IRL, zoom in and see the islands in the Lagoon.
