Cause Description:
American Tortoise Rescue is a national nonprofit 501 c 3 that is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation as well as the adoption of turtles and tortoises of all species. Founded in 1990, the rescue has taken in nearly 1000 injured and or homeless turtles and tortoises. In the same period the rescue has adopted out more than 900. Ill, deformed and traumatized turtles stay at the shelter for life. Veterinary costs, food and housing eat up a major portion of the rescue each year, and in fact the founders self fund the one and one half acre facility themselves when donations do not meet the target. The rescue uses volunteers and provides membership and a newsletter. It fights many battles in the area of cruelty and is an information organization as well.
