Cause Description:
The Music Therapy Resource Alliance (MTRA) is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which makes access to music therapy, its practitioners and the profession as a whole available to all. Our mission statement identifies our focus: Music therapy is a unique discipline with untapped potential throughout the world. Based on our desire to develop a climate of greater knowledge, understanding and access to music therapy, we dedicate ourselves to the creation and support of a global information network. The Music Therapy Resource Alliance connects people to people, people to resources and people to the profession, extending the reach of music therapy to all whom might benefit from its inclusion in the their lives. MTRA was founded in 2000 on the principle that access to the valuable treatment of music therapy should be available without restriction. In this regard, we are developing and implementing a number of programs and access opportunities, including our website at www.askmtra.org; Parent Advisory Group; Student Resource Liaison; Music Therapist Referral Network; online and offline lending library; music therapy introductory seminars; continuing education for music therapists; and our newsletter, KeyNotes. Along with these activities we realize our alliances with other organizations will be at the core of our work. Our plans are to integrate MTRA with special needs organizations such as the Autism Society, American Cancer Society, and Children & Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD). These alliances will allow us to establish MTRA as the conduit of information sharing between music therapy and the people these organizations serve. Once implemented, we can then stay connected to the pulse of the special need organizations so we can continue to provide accurate and timely information, allowing their service to people with special needs to become more dynamic and responsive. Another focus of our work is to support health care delivery by providing community and professional education regarding music therapy and its place in the treatment of people with various life challenges. Our goal in this regard is to bring a broad base of evolving information on a continuing basis to families with special needs, physicians, insurance companies, community leaders, and other allied health professionals. An important aspect of this portion of our work will be to bring people and organizations together for education and discussion. This integration will help alleviate a major obstacle that families with special needs encounter as they attempt to find and provide the best care available for their loved ones – the isolation of information.
