Cause Description:
In 2009 the Catalina Island Conservancy initiated the use of a contraceptive vaccine in order to humanely manage the population of free ranging bison on Catalina Island California. Each year biologists administer a booster inoculation to several female bison within the herd in order to maintain the population at approximately 150 individuals. The program has been extremely successful and has improved the health of both the bison and the ecology of the island.
