Cause Description:
At Courage Reins Farm, horses help individuals experiencing cancer or loss find hope and courage amidst life's hardships. Courage Reins Farm was created to foster hope and courage in the lives of children and families experiencing cancer or loss. To our knowledge, Courage Reins Farm is the only 501 (c) (3) not for profit organization of its type in Washington State. What makes Courage Reins Farm unique is that some of the horses living on the farm have been rescued from hardship and neglect. In turn, we are unique to the population we serve. Unlike traditional therapeutic riding centers, all individuals who come to Courage Reins Farm are experiencing cancer or loss in their lives. Program participants are given private lessons best suited to their individual needs. Instead of being lost in a group, they receive individual support and attention from volunteers who share in their private tears and personal victories. In the presence of a quiet, trusting, and faithful horse that has already overcome hardships in its life, Courage Reins Farm participants also gain courage and strength to face their own hardships, such as a cancer diagnosis or loss of a loved one. Visiting the farm and riding the horses offers a much needed respite from the daily routine of hospitals, medications, stress, and grief. Courage Reins Farm also hosts "days at the farm" for large groups of children from cancer support groups. The day at the farm includes horseback rides, tie-dying t-shirts, roasting s'mores, three-legged and gunnysack races, and lots of fun! At the end of the day, dozens of young riders leave with smiles on their faces, courage in their hearts, and joy in the new-found friendship with their favorite horse.
