The Diamond Blackfan Anemia Foundation, Inc., (DBAF) supports medical and scientific research into Diamond Blackfan anemia (DBA), and facilitates networking and support among DBA families. The DBAF finances itself solely through donations and is staffed exclusively by volunteers, who are mostly families affected by DBA. Diamond Blackfan anemia is a rare defect in which the bone marrow fails to make red blood cells or makes far fewer than needed. The anemia usually begins in the first year of a child's life. Typical treatment involves either long-term steroids or blood transfusions every few weeks, both of which have serious side effects. In addition, those who are transfusion dependent require daily medication (which can be given only by injection) to reduce the excessive iron in their system from the repeated transfusions.
