Cause Description:
NCA, a national nonprofit membership organization, supports a multi-disciplinary team approach to child abuse, where a team of specialists meets under one roof so that the child only has to tell the story of abuse one time. Teams typically include staff from medical and mental health services, child protective services, law enforcement, criminal justice and other victim advocacy specialists. The team approach saves abused children the trauma of reliving painful experiences in multiple interviews. The number of NCA centers has grown from 42 in 1994, to almost 200 by the end of 1998. In 1997, more than 54,000 children, 40% of whom were younger than nine years old, benefitted from children's advocacy services in 400 affiliated centers in 49 states and the District of Columbia.
