Cause Description:
White Buffalo Calf Woman Society, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota, one of the poorest areas of the United States. Organized and operated by Native Women, the organization provides services to women victimized by domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and/or stalking, and their children through shelter, support groups, individualized advocacy services and support groups for children of victims, civil legal assistance and criminal justice support/advocacy. The organization’s advocates provide victims with advocacy in the courts and social services as well as helping the victims obtain healthcare, education, housing. White Buffalo Calf Woman Society, (WBCWS) also operates a 24-hour crisis line. WBCWS has operated on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation for 33 years. The accomplishments in the community include: 1. Operation of the oldest shelter located on an Indian reservation in the nation as well as the first women of color shelter in the United States. 2. WBCWS is active in working with the tribal criminal justice system in enhancing its response to violence against women and conducts a “Men’s Program,” a court ordered re-educational program for batterers. 3. WBCWS has been a conduit for providing and developing leadership and has been a source of leadership and activism in coalition development and building on local, state, and national levels. 4. WBCWS provides public education throughout the Rosebud Reservation and within the local schools and college as well as providing training for the local agencies that respond to domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and dating violence. 5. Other noteworthy accomplishments include, in 1978, Tillie Black Bear, Executive Director, represented WBCWS and gave testimony at the U.S. Civil Rights Hearings on Spousal Abuse. During this time, Ms. Black Bear and other women began organizing the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. WBCWS was also active in the founding of the South Dakota Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault and hosted the first organizational meeting that gave birth to the Coalition.
