Twp District 214 Community Education Read to Learn Adult Literacy/Volunteer program

Cause Description:
Read to Learn, an adult Literacy/Volunteer Program is free, and volunteer-based. The program’s major goal is to improve the quality of life in the Northwest suburbs by raising the level of literacy among adults. Volunteers are trained to work one-to- one tutoring adult students with the goals of improving reading abilities and basic skills. Funded by a start-up grant from the Illinois State Board of Education, the first class of eight students was held in January, 1985 under the leadership of Township High School District 214 Community Education. Community-business-education partnerships with the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, Schaumburg Township District Library, Township High School Districts 211 and 214 have led to additional grants from the Illinois Secretary of State Literacy Office and the Illinois Community College Board as well as contributions from the private sector. The Literacy Council was founded in October 1985, involving the community in the literacy effort. Fourteen classes are comveniently located throughout the Northwest suburbs in schools, libraries and churches, providing greater accessibility for students. The total unduplicated number of students enrolled in the program since 7/01/86 is 8,904. The total unduplicated number of volunteers/tutors trained for this program since 7/01/86 is 4,869.
