Cause Description:
We provide school supplies and clothing for nearly 500 children annually in rural areas of Maine. We are part of a non profit organization dedicated to assisting adults and children with intellectual, behavioral, physical disabilities, and elder age related issues. Along the way, we came to realize that some of our families needed a helping hand in other ways too. The CWC Angels' focus is on an innovative back to school program that provides children in the surrounding communities a way to help themselves obtain school supplies and clothing. Children sign up, receive a checkbook that they fill with good deeds and positive behavior. They then visit one of our two temporary store locations to redeem their deposits and shop from a wide assortment of school supplies. Shoppers are also able to select clothing for that all important first day of school. Unique, we don't give “handouts” but have created a way for children (and their families) to help themselves and feel good about doing so. Parents often work with their child to choose positive actions, assist with filling out deposit slips and accompany their child to help make responsible choices at the store. Since implementing this program, we have seen parent involvement increase dramatically. The first year, participants were accompanied by social workers. Eleven years later, 75% of the children come with a parent! The Back to School Program is only of the projects that the CWC Angels sponsor throughout the year.
