Cause Description:
The Sonora School community has high expectations for every student and has made the commitment to work collaboratively to ensure that students meet or exceed the rigorous state standards in language arts, mathematics, and other content areas. Sonora School staff and families are committed to working together to ensure that every child reads fluently by the time he or she completes the third grade. Individualized reading assessment guides classroom reading instruction delivered by the highly professional and dedicated staff. There is a high level of parent and community involvement at Sonora School with parents and community leaders serving as classroom reading volunteers, library volunteers, field trip chaperones, Jump Start participants, and family event volunteers. Our School Community Coordinator facilitates volunteer efforts and works with parents to empower them to help their children succeed. Sonora School provides a comprehensive after-school program that focuses on academic intervention, recreation, and enrichment for all students. Organizations and programs committed to directly impacting student achievement include: School Site Council, PTA, English Learners Advisory Committee, Newport-Mesa Schools Foundation grants, Student Council, Science and Nature Clubs, Title I, English Language Development, Newport-Mesa Adult School (Adult ESL class), and Economic Impact Aid. Sonora School consistently ranks high when compared to schools with similar student populations and in 2008 received a 10 in similar school ranking. Sonora School was honored as a 2002, and 2008 California Distinguished School and 2002 Title I Achieving School.
