Cause Description:
AEHI fosters literacy and empowers people with hearing impairments to achieve their potential through unique educational options. AEHI was established in 1986 by parents and educators as a not-for-profit organization. AEHI visionaries wanted students with hearing impairments to be able to attend their neighborhood schools and to compete academically throughout the school day with their hearing peers. AEHI advocates the use of Cued Speech, a sound-based visual communication system used to clarify lip reading, as a tool to improve literacy. Cued Speech is compatibe with oral/aural, total communication, and bilingual philosophies, enhancing instruction and comunication in each mode. Cued Speech workshops are held on a regular basis. AEHI representatives travel through the Midwest to conduct workshops for school districts, families of deaf people, and professionals in deaf education.
