Dollars for Scholars is truly “grass-roots Americana" because its chapter volunteers raise their scholarship money locally, keep the money locally and decide how to award the money locally. Most chapters take both need and merit into consideration in choosing their scholarship recipients. Dollars for Scholars empowers communities to help themselves by educating their young people. Those students return to the community with more knowledge and higher expectations. They earn more. They achieve more. They create an atmosphere which encourages stability, growth and economic opportunity. A paradigm of decreasing expectations is replaced with a better life for everyone. Dollars for Scholars is a program of Scholarship America, the nation's largest nonprofit, private-sector scholarship and educational support organization. Scholarship America has earned a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent evaluator of charities.
