Treehouse

Seattle, Washington

Cause Description:
Every child needs a Treehouse. For some, it’s a room with a teacher, a flute and some sheet music. For others, it’s a mountain cabin filled with new friends. Or a dugout with bats, balls, and your very own glove. Or the school library with a kind and patient tutor. Or a store where the jackets are nice and warm and they don't cost a thing. Treehouse was founded to provide just such a place for kids in foster care right here in King County. Today, more than 15,000 children suffering the effects of abuse and neglect, many placed in foster care, are eligible for our services. Treehouse makes a difference in their lives by providing services that supplement their material needs, help them learn, and give them a real childhood, as well as hope for the future. These services include Tutoring, Educational Advocacy, Coaching-to-College, Little Wishes, Summer Camp and the Wearhouse. Together they offer foster kids what all children so desperately need: a safe place to dream. No one knows more about the plight of foster kids than the grown-ups who manage their cases. In 1988, a group of social workers in King County responded to the deprivations they witnessed day after day by founding Treehouse, an organization devoted to closing the educational and enrichment gap between children in foster care and those in stable living situations. Today Treehouse serves more than 3,000 foster kids a year and is the leading organization of its kind in the state.
