"California Literacy, Inc. is a non-profit, volunteer assisted, educational organization which provides statewide leadership to new and existing literacy programs and their students by offering diverse training, resources, consultation, and advocacy to help people gain the literacy skills they need to participate more effectively in society. Founded in 1956, California Literacy, Inc. is the nation's oldest and largest statewide adult volunteer literacy organization. Its purpose is to establish literacy programs and to support them through consulting, tutor training, trainer development, and ongoing education. A private non-profit organization, California Literacy supports programs in more than 300 literacy centers statewide. Staffed largely by volunteers, these programs focus on recruiting and training tutors and matching them with adult literacy and ESL (English as a Second Language) students. California Literacy is the state affiliate of Laubach Literacy Action.
