Cause Description:
The Sturge-Weber Foundation(www.sturge-weber.com)incorporated in 1987 to support patients, families and medical professionals with Port Wine Stain (Capillary Malformations) related conditions such as Sturge-Weber (facial Port Wine Stain,glaucoma,and seizures) as well as Klippel-Trenaunay(Port Wine Stain,enlarged limbs, blood flow concerns). The SWF fosters and facilitates clinical and scientific research, funds treatment Centers of Excellence, and raises public and medical professional awareness on the syndromes. They are genetic disorders of the blood vessels which affects about one in 200 people (1,000,000 with birthmarks,est. 8-15,000 with Sturge-Weber, and 11,000 with Klippel-Trenaunay). Donations will provide support, education and research for these rare conditions. Family fundraisers, grants and some corporate funding has already provided funding to identify hormone abnormalities occur, angiogenesis occurs,seizures and headaches are frequent, and glaucoma is not congenital in Sturge-Weber. More can and should be done to improve the quality of life for the individuals living with Port Wine Stain conditions who may have a seizure as young as one day old,be born with glaucoma or enlarged limbs!
