Cause Description:
The Kids on the Block story began in 1977, when ten year old Anthony who had cerebral palsy was adjusting to his neighborhood elementary school. The practice of inclusion or “mainstreaming,” was new for the school and Anthony and his classmates were having trouble adapting. Academically, Anthony did well, but he complained that his classmates would not talk to him because he was different. His special education teacher created a puppet she named “Mark Riley,” to help educate the boy’s classmates about cerebral palsy. After that, many things changed for Anthony and the Kids on the Block was launched. The South Central Kentucky Kids on the Block troupe brought Mark Riley and his “puppet friends” to our area in 1985. As we celebrate our 20th anniversary South Central Kentucky KOB has grown to offer programs on disabilities such as spina bifida and visual impairment, medical differences such as leukemia and AIDS; educational differences including learning disabilities and ADHD, and social concerns including sexual abuse prevention, and alternatives to violence.
