Cause Description:
Futurewise was formed by local citizens and activists in 1990 in response to the adoption of the Growth Management Act (GMA). While Washington State put into place a roadmap for community and natural resource planning, there is no agency charged with enforcement of the GMA. Futurewise was formed largely to take on this role. Futurewise is now the only statewide group in Washington dedicated to ensuring that our state and local governments manage growth responsibly. Over the last 18 years, Futurewise has protected over a million acres of farm and forestland from destructive overdevelopment, helped make our communities more attractive for children and families, and improved Washington’s transportation choices. Our organizing, advocacy, public education, legal programs, and the technical support that we provide local groups have become the foundation of good growth management in Washington.
