LIFT’s mission is to ensure access to information, support, and community-based services for the several hundred thousand of children and families involved in the New York City Family Court system –families who turn to or are brought to Family Courts each year because they have problems they cannot resolve without outside assistance. Our vitally important services address the fact that the majority of litigants face the Court in the wake of a family crisis without an attorney, and without any understanding of the legal system or their rights. LIFT’s bilingual staff and our 14 original Family Court resource guides – available in Chinese, Korean, English, Russian and Spanish – empower families with an understanding of the legal process, and equip them to advocate for themselves. As a result, families are able to restore their stability and well-being faster, and the court system is more efficient.
