According to Rosalyn Carter, there are only three kinds of people in the world - Those who HAVE BEEN caregivers, those who ARE caregivers, and those who WILL BE caregivers. The Well Spouse motto, "When one is sick...two need help!" says it all. New caregiver statistics come out every day showing how important emotional support is to the caregiver. And while family and friends are a tremendous help with getting tasks done, caregivers need support from each other for emotional stress relief. WSA, founded in 1988, is the only national organization to focus exclusively on spousal caregivers. A spousal caregiver faces challenges that are very unique, compared to other caregivers. We provide support groups, an on-line support forum, mentor programs, round robin letter writing groups, respite weekends, and an annual national conference to spousal caregivers. We also have a legislative affairs coordinator who advocates for spousal caregiver issues on a state and national basis. Our members take care of spouses with a wide range of illnesses- MS, Parkinson's, ALS, Alzheimer's, Diabetes, Paralysis, Stroke - to name a few. The majority of our membership is between the ages of 35 and 65. They take care of their ill spouse, they are generally the major wage- earner of the family, many have young children, and they take care of their household, as well.
