The Animal Protection Society of Orange County (APS) was founded in 1962 to address animal welfare issues in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. APS managed the Orange County Animal Shelter for 25 years through a contract that ended in June 2004 and moved all of its operations from the shelter to our beautiful sanctuary in western Orange County over the summer of 2004. APS board and staff are grateful for the generous financial and volunteer support of our community as we’ve made this important transition. APS has helped tens of thousands of animals since 1962 and we look forward to our next phase of growth. The mission of APS is to build a compassionate community to support and ensure the well-being of animals in Orange County and surrounding areas. Our mission remains the same and now we’ll be able to expand the programs based at our sanctuary in further support of the animals in our community. APS works to achieve its mission by being a full-service animal welfare organization located at the 50-acre APS Felicité Latané Animal Sanctuary at 6311 Nicks Road in Mebane. Programs at the sanctuary include the APS Dog Training Program made up of the APS Learning Center for training classes and events, extensive outdoor agility fields, and a large dog park; the Nicks Road Veterinary Clinic providing low-cost spay/neuter services for the Orange County Animal Shelter and the wider community; education outreach and advocacy; the volunteer program; and the new APS Adoption Center. The sanctuary also features an administrative cottage at the entrance along with a small barn and corral for holding large animals in need of protection by Orange County Animal Control and other approved animal welfare organizations. Animal adoptions, dog training, low-cost spay/neuters, education outreach and advocacy—we’re growing thanks to the help of all our supporters. APS is fortunate to be at the forefront of an emerging national movement to save more and more animals through public education, provision of low-cost spay/neuter services, and progressive animal adoptions and dog training based on new understanding about animal behavior. APS board and staff are grateful to be able to help our community this way and appreciate all the support that’s been extended to us over the years by our volunteers and generous donors. APS is a tax-exempt charitable organization under Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3). All donations to the APS are tax-deductible.
