JnK Call of the Wild Sanctuary

Sinclairville, New York

Cause Description:
JNK'S Call of the Wild Sanctuary was born out of love and appreciation for all creatures. When we started out with our first lion some 17 years ago we were just private owners with a deep love for animals. At different times our facility has been home to a wide array of domestic, farm, and exotic creatures, including dogs and cats; snakes and birds; chickens, ducks, turkeys, and a hobo pheasant; horses, cows, pigs, goats, and a camel; and of course the exotics, the lions, tigers, bears, wolves, leopards and foxes. Back then, the prevailing wisdom was that the primary concern for endangered species like the tigers was preservation of the species. It became apparent however, that the real need was for permanent homes for displaced exotics, whether from unlicensed homes, abusive or neglectful situations, or places that for reasons beyond their control just could not keep them. Most zoos will not accept rescued or surrendered exotics, as in most cases their genetic history is unknown. Without sanctuaries and other properly licensed facilities, these animals would be euthanized. We currently provide a permanent home for 12 tigers, 2 lions, 3 bears, 3 wolves, 3 fox, as well as non-exotics such as dogs, cats, and horses. Until early 2004, JNK's was a privately owned farm, funded solely from our own pockets. But with the increasing need for sanctuaries, sky-rocketing costs to keep the animals healthy, and more animals seeking refuge, we felt that we needed to expand our business into a Non-profit Corporation, allowing us to grow even further. We are not a zoo, and our funds are not unlimited. Even now that we are a non-profit corporation certified as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt entity able to accept donations and volunteers, our funds are always tight. We do not live in a mansion; in fact out own house is in need of extensive repairs. Yet now, as always, our animal charges are our first priority. Donations are spent on the animals, repairing and improving enclosures and providing enrichment, not on fancy advertising or slick promotion. Enclosures are always clean and bellies are always full. However simple maintenance consumes most of our time and money. What we don't make in donations comes from our own pockets. We own 54 acres in a valley in Sinclairville, NY, which backs on state owned land, giving our animals some measure of privacy. We would love to have all of our animals in "habitats" rather than "enclosures", and plans include much expansion and development. This is where volunteers and benefactors come in; we can't do it without your help.
