Housed in a landmark 1891 building, Kirkland Arts Center has conducted visual art courses and been home to a non-profit gallery since it opened in 1962. The Arts Center was founded by a group of visionary community leaders committed to rescuing the Peter Kirk building and converting it into a multifaceted arts organization. Today the Arts Center continues to meet its mission of creating and promoting participation in a vibrant visual arts community. For 42 years Kirkland Arts Center (KAC) has provided artists and arts lovers of all ages and abilities with opportunities to work together, build creative skills and augment their knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts. The Kirkland Arts Center Gallery presents innovative, accessible contemporary art by local, national and international artists. It is the only professional non-profit gallery on the Eastside, and offers rare opportunities for emerging artists and curators to exhibit work in a professional setting. Gallery exhibits are chosen on the basis of their artistic excellence, creativity and resonance with the community. The Arts Center’s Education program serves more than 2,000 students and employs 75 instructor-artists each year. Classes cover a wide array of traditional to contemporary techniques in media such as drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and glass. The Resident Ceramic Artist program at KAC provides 8 ceramic artists the opportunity to work in residence with a cohesive group of peers and to mentor ceramics students.
