Cause Description:
For 20 hours a week, Foster Grandparent volunteers, ages 60 and older, serve as mentors for at-risk children and youth with special needs through a variety of Boston and South Shore community organizations. You will find them making a difference in schools, Head Start programs, daycare centers, after-school programs, hospitals and juvenille correctional facilities. They read to children, help them with math skills, serve as compassionate listeners and provide a caring presence. Children are engaged by their wisdom and gentle ways. With the positive influences of these grandparents, children gain confidence and skills to become more productive members of our society. The program creates a win-win situation for everyone involved. The children benefit from the nurturing, special tutoring, guidance and individual attention they receive, and the Foster Grandparents benefit by gaining personal fulfillment and a modest stipend. We would be very grateful if you could help us. We have an ever-growing waiting list of low-income senior citizens who would like to join and make a difference, so we need to raise money for our program.
