Cause Description:
Eastside Housing Association (EHA), a 501 (c) 3, was founded in 1997 to break the cycle of homelessness for families in suburban north and east King County, by: • Increasing the supply of shelter and transitional housing to meet a growing need and by; • Identifying and solving the systemic problems which cause families and individuals to become homeless through intensive case management and sustained support. EHA has developed a new approach to assisting homeless families in north and east King County by uniting housing, counseling, child care and job assistance on one campus. By doing so, we are able to make the most of every dollar spent while providing our families with a safe environment where they can concentrate their efforts on getting their lives back on track and end their cycle of homelessness. Having developed this successful model, Eastside Housing Association is making significant strides towards meeting the need for such services in north and east King County by opening its new project, Avondale Park, in the spring of 2004. EHA’s program at Avondale Park works with homeless families who are dedicated toward ending their cycle of homelessness and becoming self-reliant. Over 60% of the families served are working but unable to afford the costs of both child care and housing and these families are seeking training and education to improve their earning capacity. 85% of families served are homeless women and children who have transitioned out of a domestic violence situation and are dedicated to turning their lives around with intense case management goal-setting, education and support services. The Avondale Park program will serve over 450 family members annually by offering: 8 Emergency Family Shelter Units serving over 300 family members; 50 units of Transitional Housing with over 150 family members “graduating” each year and moving into permanent housing. Additionally, the site includes a Child Development Center which will serve up to 85 children annually (60 at any one time) ranging in ages from 2 months to 5 years.
