What is the Michigan Women's Studies Association? MWSA was founded in 1973 following a call for organization issued by five Mich. St. U faculty members engaged in teaching a new course on "Women in American Society." It became the first academic association in the country devoted to upgrading and updating what is taught and thought about American women in our schools, colleges, and universities. What are the goals of MWSA? MWSA promotes non-racist, non-sexist education in public schools, community colleges and baccalaureate institutions in Michigan. MWSA works for the elimination of bias and stereotyping in education and for the development of courses of study which will represent the accomplishments of all people. MWSA encourages and promotes research by, for and about women. MWSA serves as a link between educators and the community through projects such as the Michigan Women's Historical Center and Hall of Fame. What is the Association doing to further its goals? MWSA sponsors annual conferences to share research and to provide a forum for feminist scholarship. These conferences have featured such well-known feminists as Florence Howe, Elizabeth Janeway, Jessie Bernard, Zillah Eisenstein, Marjorie Bell Chambers, Rhoda Unger, Harriette Arnow, Gwen Frostic and Midge Mackenzie. MWSA publishes a quarterly newsletter. MWSA is actively engaged in the development of the Michigan Women's Historical Center and Hall of Fame in Lansing. The Center pays tribute to distinguished Michigan women, both past and present, and provides visibility to the contributions women have made to the development of our state.
