Cause Description:
Committed to the idea that community spirit and "working together works", GPJOC is staffed entirely by non-paid volunteers. Established in 1995, the Pantry Program initially provided for 65 families a month. The pantry quickly grew to serving over 650 households a month (translating into over 3000 individuals). We provide these households with balanced food packages, clothing, toiletries, furniture, bedding and assorted household items. We accept referrals from all agencies and churches throughout the Brookhaven area and work closely with these agencies and local government to insure that eligible families apply for social services. However, due to the cutback in welfare and food stamp support, we have found that a growing number of these households have been moved off of the welfare rolls. Since most of the heads of household work at or barely above the minimum wage, and given the high cost of housing on Long Island, without our help, many of these families would not be able to provide their children with nutritionally balanced meals.
