Cause Description:
SEEDS helps neighborhoods and communities create sustainable green spaces for gardening, gathering, and education. We have two main programs: DIG (Durham Inner-city Gardeners) is a youth-run micro-enterprise. Urban teens are hired for the growing season to do a market garden, learning organic gardening, small business and leadership skills along the way. They sell their produce at the local Farmer's Market and high-end restaurants and gourmet stores. Community Harvest helps neighborhood groups identify, clean up and plant vacant lots. While this has the effect of beautifying their neighborhoods, what we are striving for is to initiate a dynamic community process which will result in a beautiful, safe, productive space which the neighbors are proud of and invested in and use to come together.
