Cause Description:
The Literacy Council of Southwest Louisiana, Inc. is a community-based non-profit, literacy organization serving the five-parish area of Southwest Louisiana. The Literacy Council recruits and trains volunteers to assist in its mission of raising the area's functional literacy levels. The Council's programs principally target adults with literacy skills below a sixth-grade level. The Council's programs are designed to improve individual self-sufficiency, so that program participants are empowered to fulfill their responsibilities in the community, the family, at school, and on the job. Community volunteers provide undereducated adults with one-to-one individualized tutoring in basic skills, i.e. reading, spelling, and writing. Small group instruction is available for basic math and survival skills as well as English as a second language classes for those with limited English proficiency. All Council instructional programs are phonics-based but incorporate skills applications and sight reading. The Council provides all tutoring services and small group instruction free of charge to its adult students.
