Chimp Haven,The National Chimpanzee Sanctuary, was formed in 1995 by the country's experts in the care and management of captive chimpanzees. Chimp Haven is the nation's only sanctuary organization with expertise in the unique requirements for the care and housing of chimpanzees who have been used in biomedical research. Chimp Haven's team of experts and professionals are dedicated to the lifetime care of chimpanzees, and have built a facility to provide a state-of-the-art, cost effective, natural home for chimpanzees. As our closest living animal relatives, chimpanzees, in many ways, mirror us physiologically, intellectually, and socially. With a genetic linkage to humans greater than ninety-eight percent, thousands of chimpanzees have been our surrogates in medical and scientific studies throughout the last century. In addition to being sent into space before humans, chimpanzees were key to the discovery of vaccines against hepatitis and the search for a cure for AIDS. However, upon completing their service, most chimpanzees live out their lives, nearly fifty years, in research facilities. No sanctuary today is able to provide a large population of laboratory chimpanzees with the special care and conditions they require. Chimp Haven exists for the hundreds of chimpanzees who have nowhere else to go.
