Creating Sacred Places for Children: A School Reform Model

Cause Description:
"Creating Sacred Places for Children: Improving Indian Schools for the 21st Century" has been ideas and concepts evolving over time, as a way to improved educational opportunities for American Indian children. Conceived and implemented by a group of Indian educators, we are trying to improve the lives of Indian children through making schools "sacred places" for learners of all ages. Using effective schools research as the core of what we do, we are also working with schools to incorporate tribal values such as respect, spirituality, honesty, wisdom, generosity, etc.; incorporate a performance-based assessment system that more accurately reflects student learning and focuses on what students know -- not what they don't know;develop and incorporate a culturally-relevant curriculum that allows students to connect schools with what's meaningful in their lives; and to incorporate wellness, healing and prevention strategies that address the historical and current complexities in the lives of Indian children. Funds will be used for continuing to develop and update materials, provide services to schools, and adding to the research.
