Cause Description:
The Latino Commission on AIDS is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to improving and expanding HIV/AIDS prevention, research, treatment and other services to the Latino community through organizing, education, model program development, capacity building and training. Founded in March 1990, the Commission started as a group of committed and influential leaders who came together in response to the devastating impact of AIDS in the Latino community. In 1996 the Commission began to expand its focus to other diseases affecting the Latino community in response to linguistic isolation faced by many in a healthcare environment, which affected Latinos with and without HIV. The Commission offers a wide range of programs that address the needs of Latino communities affected by HIV and other diseases. The Latino Commission receives funding for various projects from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Ryan White Title I Funds, US Office for Minority Health, the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute, and several private foundations.
