Cause Description:
Tennis Opportunity Program (TOP) is a not-for-profit organization that has promoted the academic and athletic development of economically disadvantaged children since 1989. Since then, TOP has taught over 1,500 children how to play tennis and has fostered the development of over 10 nationally ranked players. TOP's mission is excellence through opportunity, and to help children reach their potential as tennis players, as students and as people. TOP's children have shown that they can do more than just learn the game, attain decent grades and stay out of trouble. They can achieve scholastic and athletic excellence, as evidenced by the achievement of superior grades at Chicago's best schools and the attainment of national rankings in tennis. TOP provides tennis scholarships and academic mentoring to promising junior players. TOP’s scholarship recipients have traditionally been 11 to 18 years old and have earned national, sectional and Chicago District rankings. In January of 1999, TOP began a program called Future Stars to help younger children maximize their potential by giving them excellent instruction and guidance at an early age. Future Stars provides four to ten year-old children with free tennis instruction and equipment as well as academic mentoring throughout the school year.
