Prairie State Legal Services, is a not-for-profit organization providing essential civil legal assistance without charge to poor, elderly, and disabled clients in 36 counties in northern and central Illinois. Prairie State defines its mission as: "to provide or coordinate the delivery of high quality legal services to low income individuals, families and groups. The delivery of legal services will be directed to protecting the client's basic human needs, including income, shelter and physical safety, enhancing the client's independence, and resolving related legal problems". In 2001 Prairie State provided services to 14,611 households though its ten local service offices. Behind the statistics you find that 2-5 people are affected by the services provided, nearly half of them children. According to the 1990 U.S. Census, there are 249,619 poor persons in approximately 97,000 households, residing in the thirty-six county area served by Prairie State. For the vast majority of these persons, Prairie State Legal Services is the only source of free legal help in non-criminal matters.
