Psycho-Babble

Chicago, Illinois

Cause Description:
Psycho-Babble is an online peer support group for people dealing with mental health problems. Participants support and educate each other by "posting" messages to each other on the Web. It is open to anyone, anywhere, who can get online. This is essential for those who are too embarrassed to seek support in person or for whom local resources are not available. Psycho-Babble also generates data for research on how online communities function and affect the mental health of their members. It is managed by Robert Hsiung, MD, Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the University of Chicago, aka Dr. Bob. It is located at: http://www.dr-bob.org/babble . Psycho-Babble was started in June 1998. Between January and August 2000, there were 21,230 posts (an average of 94 per day). Between April and November 2000, 1018 members registered and posted. They ranged in age from 15 to 74, and two-thirds were female. 85% were from the US. People do not have to post, however, to benefit. In the single month of January 2001, Psycho-Babble Web pages were "served" to readers 855,628 times.
