Hawaii Island Humane Society
The Hawaii Island Humane Society is a non-profit organization that operates three shelters on the Big Island. Our mission is to promote respect for all animals, prevent cruelty to animals, and eliminate pet overpopulation. This is a daunting task on a large island with a small donor base, where over 15,500 animals were brought to our shelters last year. We do everything we can to provide care and comfort for these lost, abandoned, or unwanted animals and to find new homes for as many as possible. All adopted animals are spayed/neutered before going home, and we run a community assistance spay/neuter program to provide low-cost surgeries for other pets. We believe that humane education for elementary school children is essential to accomplish our mission, and our education program is slowly but steadily expanding.
