Cause Description:
A premier minority repository. Named after a famed revolt in 1839 led by the African, Cinque on the Spanish schooner La Amistad (friendship) as he and a group of his countrymen were being held captive enroute to slavery in the Americas. Among other rare documents, the Amistad Research Center contains the documentary records of the U.S. Supreme Court case argued by former President John Quincy Adams, which ended in the Africans receiving their freedom. The Amistad Research Center is the first institution created to document the struggle for freedom by African Americans and the modern Civil Rights Movement. It is the nation's largest independent African American archive. Along with its 10,000,000 documents, it has an extensive collection on Africa, oral history, video collections, publications and significant art holdings. It also contains rare archival materials on the struggles of other minorities, including native Americans, for equality of opportunity.
