Founded in 1983, the Center is a nonprofit wildlife hospital and environmental education program that connects people to wildlife through rehabilitation, education and research to preserve our wild heritage. We are the region’s only humane medical care center for thousands of sick, orphaned and injured wild animals. Our ultimate goal is not just to save injured animals, but also to prevent them from being injured. We do this through first-hand education. By using the medical process of caring for wild animals as a vehicle for reconnecting people to wildlife and nature, we expect to create fundamental change. Our premise is simple: in order to preserve wildlife and the environment, people must develop a feeling of familiarity and ownership that leads to a sense of responsibility to take action. The route to creating ownership is first-hand exposure and real life experiences. By witnessing first hand the damage caused to wildlife by human activity and by participating in the care of wildlife to right these wrongs, people become knowledgeable stewards, empowered to take action.
