Helping Our Own is a project that links poorly equipped rural and small town volunteer fire departments with hand-me-down firefighting equipment from tax-supported departments throughout the U.S. We collect info on donors and the needy, arrange shipping and oversee the distribution of the used equipment. This is a brand new program, started in 2000, by a penniless fire department in the Missouri Ozarks. It has already placed over $2 million worth of useful fire equipment with over 30 departments in MO and is expanding nationally now. Before this project began, older equipment was being destroyed or shipped to third-world countries.
