Cause Description:
As rents go up in Cambridge, many long-term residents are losing the roofs over their heads. Some end up in shelters or on the street. The Cambridge Housing Assistance Fund (CHAF) supplements the startup costs of renting an apartment for homeless families and individuals. CHAF is sponsored by the Cambridge Council of Realtors in a public/private partnership with CASCAP, Inc., the Cambridge Housing Authority, and the City of Cambridge Multi Service Center for the Homeless. These agencies provide apartment search, counseling and stabilization services for 'at risk' populations in Cambridge. With generous support from Cambridge banks, businesses and individuals, last year's fundraising concert raised $100,000 to assist homeless and near homeless families with the startup costs of renting an apartment. So far, sixty-six households have been helped. As rents continue to rise in Cambridge, the need is greater than ever to help families stay in Cambridge.
