Cause Description:
Located in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, the Richard J. Murphy Elementary School has 800 children, ages 5 - 12 years old. Ninety percent of the African-American, Haitian, and Vietnamese children who attend the school participate in the federally-funded free and reduced breakfast and lunch program. Fifty-five percent of the families of children receive Aid to Families with Dependent Children. Thirty-three percent come from homes in which no English is spoken. Twenty families live in homeless shelters. In spite of these dismal statistics, teachers, families, and administrators have formed a team to improve the school through providing after-school, before school, Saturday, and summer programs for children and family literacy classes for parents.
